Description

For your Final Project, you’ll be creating a composition –One of the first decisions you’ll have to make is what Form you’ll use to create your composition.

(Think simple here – even if you choose Symphony, the composition can still be short — the main idea here is to understand what forms are available to us as a composer)

For example, if you are a Writer, you may write a Short Story, Poem, Essay or Novel. Some forms can be further broken down into more specific types: A Poem can be a Sonnet, a Haiku, or Epic Verse, for example.

Think of the Form as simply a structure in which to package up your ideas. Different Forms have different durations, repeat patterns, and number of sections, or parts (usually called movements)

Form should not be confused with Genre. Form tells us about the shape and structure of the writing or creation, whereas Genre usually tells us about the content, style or era.

There can be cross over of disciplines as well: Poetry can be put to music. Dance forms often developed along with music, so we have Minuet, Mazurka, Waltz, Polonaise, Allemand, Galliard, Tango, Ballet, Tarantella etc.

Musical Forms of the Classical Era include Symphony, Concerto, Sonata, Overture, March etc.

In the 20th Century, even the most experimental composers still used tried-and-true Forms, but the content might be radically different than what you’d expect. Case in point: John Cage Sonata No. 2. (Compare with Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 5)

In this forum, I’d like us to explore the myriad forms used presently and historically in music.

Most of what we listen to in popular music is some variation of a Song form, with two main parts, a Verse and a Chorus, and optionally an Intro, Bridge and Outro (or Coda–tail ending)

For example, you might have ABABCB, where A=Verse, B=Chorus, C=Bridge.

The Song and its variations are just one Form. Let’s define others.

You can use any source. (One comprehensive list is from Dolmetch Here is the Link. Scroll down to “FORMS”.)

For Your Post:

the Post Title should be the Name of the Form.

Include a Link to an example of a composition that uses this Form.
