This is a summative essay that aims to draws together the different elements of the course. Students should draw on course reading and hand-outs to support essay writing as well as their own searches in the library and relevant other sources. In this essay you are being asked to consider:
As a social worker:
• What are the key legislative and policy frameworks you would need to use if undertaking an assessment? REMEMBER WRITE ABOUT SCOTLAND LEGISLATION.
• How and why would you involve the child and family in the assessment?
• What key theories might you use to inform your assessment? (write at least 2 theories or approaches)
• What are some challenges and tensions you might encounter undertaking the assessment and how would you plan to resolve them?
You are not expected write an assessment of the child. Rather, you are asked to discuss how a social worker would approach undertaking an assessment and why.
This essay should be informed by relevant theory, concepts and research, reflect a thorough understanding of the child’s developmental and welfare needs and demonstrate a capacity for sound analysis and understanding. Relevant literature should be drawn upon throughout the essay i.e. in all sections.
