You will prepare a case study on a student you are teaching or have taught. This student should be one with whom you experienced a behavior/classroom management challenge. Ideally, the student would be different from you ethnically, racially and/or socio-economically. The case study must be double-spaced, about six pages in length, and free from any spelling, grammar or format (see rubric). The following components must be included:
Description of yourself and the student. Using information provided in class and any other resources, describe yourself and the student in terms of your identity (biological, social, existential, and cultural). Remember, it is best not to assume anything, so recall and explain details to the best of your ability. PLEASE REFER TO THE MULTICULTURAL ARTICLES AND READINGS along with the Adolescent PowerPoint in the Course Docs link to help you provide a context. Please cite the articles when appropriate.
Description of the management challenge. What did the student do/not do that presented a challenge for you? How did you handle the situation? What was the student’s response/reaction? Did what you tried result in a behavior change? Why or why not? How were the parents/ guardians involved? Describe your interactions with the student and the guardians. What were you feeling?
Comparison of your beliefs and values with the student’s beliefs and values. Discuss whether or not your general beliefs and the student’s general beliefs were similar to the beliefs and values of different cultures shared in class. Explain how this knowledge did/did not affect the methods you used to communicate with, motivate, and redirect the behavior of student(s). Include your own initial stereotypes and biases and how you addressed them.
Summary. Reflect on the relationship between diversity/identity and classroom management. Discuss the importance of knowing your students and the role of the teacher in developing respectful students who celebrate diversity. Relate any thoughts, feelings or new knowledge that you have gained and how it will influence you as you grow in the teaching profession.
