- In Chapter 5: Oral English Development in Second Language Acquisition (Peregoy and Boyle. 2017) the author states, “Although these classroom oral language opportunities may seem obvious to you, research indicates that teachers do from 65 to 95 percent of the talking in most classrooms (Lowry, 1980; Nunan, 2005). Conscious planning is needed to make time in class for English learners to use talk for social and academic purposes” (p.161). Think about your own classroom experience as a teacher and a learner- who does most of the talking? What conscious planning can you do to encourage more oral language development in the classroom?
- Providing students opportunities to use academic language every day is a best practice. View this video. Describe how you could implement academic conversations into your own teaching setting.
