Critique: Qualitative experiences of disengagement in assertive outreach teams, in particular for “black” men: Clinicians’ perspectives.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Qualitative experiences of disengagement in assertive outreach teams, in particular for “black” men: Clinicians’ perspectives.

Part 1: Critique of a research article (2500 words).
You will need to:
1. The research papers will be available from your cohort Blackboard w/c 2nd July 2018 (wk. 45).
2. An “appropriate framework” can be one you have used in class or have found for yourself –
remember to reference the source in either case.
3. To identify the strengths and weaknesses of the article overall, you will need to complete the
whole framework. PLEASE NOTE: The annotated framework MUST be put into an appendix –
inadequate annotation and particularly omission – could cost you up to 10% of your marks!
4. The six key areas are to be critically analysed; the use of referenced works looking at theoretical
aspects of the key areas and the piece of research as a whole, are an expectation!
5. This discussion should therefore include comment on the relevance of the research article and
especially its findings, to your professional practice.
The following is only a suggested structure and guidance on what to include for the critique.
An introduction: a brief introduction to the assignment and the nature of evidence based practice
(EBP) and criticality. Include a brief rationale for your selection and correctly referenced framework.
You should clearly identify the article being critiqued (see also note below)!
Main Component is the analysis and discussion to demonstrate your critical thinking and
judgement in considering the strengths and weaknesses of your chosen article.
NB: Please do not describe or attach a copy of the research article
1. Choose ONE
article from the
FIVE provided
4. Select an appropriate
critiquing framework and make
critical notes onto (annotate)
your chosen framework, with the
emphasis on the above six key
areas…
5. Write your essay: include a brief
discussion of EBP, then go on to discuss
the six key areas shown in Box 3; you
must also include some critical comment on
the overall value/application of the
research to professional practice
3. These six ‘key’ areas must be
addressed:
a. The question / aim / objective of
the study;
b. Design / methodology;
c. Sample / subjects / participants;
d. Data collection methods;
e. Data analysis and results;
f. Ethical considerations…
READ THE BOXES WITH
THE NOTES BELOW!
2. READ
the article
carefully…

Conclusion and Implications for your Practice should summarise your critique of the article
overall. Discuss whether the research is supported by local / national policy or practice, including
from your own practice experience.
The use of an annotated critiquing framework demonstrates your understanding of the major
elements of the research article and so, as noted above, you will need to fill in the whole
framework, concentrating on the six ‘key’ areas for analysis. It is good practice to complete the
whole framework as this should also help you with your PD3 work, as well as here. The annotated
framework MUST be included in an appendix (see note 3 above) and be word processed. The
framework needs to have reasonably detailed annotation, but not exhaustive, as you will be
discussing the six ‘key’ areas in greater depth within the essay.
Throughout your essay use appropriate references to support your discussion, such as published
material on research methodology/methods and evidence based/informed practice to develop your
analysis and critical thinking. Further, some literature related to the topic of the research being
analysed will also be needed, to more fully analyse the implications for and application to, practice.
Marks will be awarded not only for the amount of critical thought, but also the quality of it and the
judgements you come to as a result.
