Question 1. (50%)
Assume you are the DBA in our XYZ Company, in the first stage of performance analysis, before the system goes live, you have taken the time to meet with your users and understand the type of system and the transaction that will be most prevalent. You understand that your system is a mix of online transaction processing (OLTP) and decision support system (DSS), with some ad hoc queries thrown in. You have discussed the most common transactions that will be run on the system and identified them as the critical business transaction (CBTs). After identifying the CBTs, you were able to work with your users and, for most of those transaction, identifying how long each transaction should take and when it will normally be run.
At some point, you get a call from your user community telling you that the database is running “very slow”. Please explain in detail the step by step that you will pursue in troubleshooting the database poor performance. There is a universally accepted approach that has 14 distinct steps, but you are welcomed to discuss some of your own ideas.

Imagine you are the lead DBA in BWG Company, and in the process of analyzing your system performance, you executed a queries to determine the components of your response time equation. In the process, you found that you were spending 85 percent of the time working and the remainder waiting for some resources. Further investigation showed that a majority of the CPU time was in the “other” category, related to application usage.
You then checked to see what SQL was running during one of the slowdown periods and found queries running related to the new planning department application. You have found the source the problem! Good job! Now your opinions are?
