PLEASE READ AND LOOK AT ASSIGNMENT WORKSHOP WEEK 11. NEEDS TO BE FROM THIS LIST AND THESE POER POINTS
Please refer to the university-wide assessment criteria as explained on the following pages. In addition, take the following assignment-specific criteria and guidance into account:
The word count for the assignment is 3500 words. In addition, take the following assignment-specific criteria and guidance into account:
• Two different theories and two different examples, you would write approximately 1500 words on each, as well as an introductory and concluding paragraph.
Each week discusses a different aspect of the construction of the other. This means a weekly opportunity to find an example which illustrates that particular aspect/relationship/topic of the week.
• My advice is that you should be looking out for examples throughout the module. During our assignment and formative feedback session in Week 10, I will expect to see at least some of the examples you are planning to use and evidence that you have begun to think about how you might apply at least one of the theories to it. I am also happy for you to run ideas past me in the course of the semester. The important thing is not to leave everything to the end but to accumulate examples as you go. These can include things like media articles – newspaper, magazine, online media, even government reports if they are relevant.
Drawing on at least two theories allows for sufficient comparison and contrast for you to meet the learning outcomes and to critically engage with both theory and article
• Key points to consider (the university-wide criteria are in bold)
1. Demonstrate your understanding of how the construction of ‘otherness’ is understood and theorised in the theoretical perspectives that you will be discussing (AS)
2. Find real-world examples which link to the chosen theories (R&E)
3. In your essay, you should
– Demonstrate your understanding of the theory and engagement with the readings associated with the theory (SKU)
– Explain why your chosen examples of that theory are valid (R&E and SKU)
– Discuss the way in which the construction of otherness is manifested in your examples. What does your analysis of the example through the lens of the theory enable us to see? For example, does the application of the theory to the example suggest a specific kind of othering or a complex mix of different kinds of construction? Is the construction of otherness an explicit one or more implicit? (SKU and AS)
– Communicate your ideas in a clear and informative manner, using appropriate academic conventions. Your examples should be supported by appropriate referencing and relevant source material. As suggested, these can be newspaper articles, magazine articles, online media articles which may blend audio with visual, photography and text etc. Be alive to the implications of all of these in how the ‘other’ is constructed (AS)
