ASSIGNMENT ONE
Appreciating place from a digital perspective
Geographically referenced digital information, and the technologiesthat utilize such data, are fundamentally alteringthe ways in which we experience and relate toplace. In this assignment, we will consider the ways in which digital information about the earth’s surface may be used to represent places, including those we may never have visited.Using Google Earth, find eachof the following places: 1.Mutitjulu,Australia;2.La Isabela,Dominican Republic;3.Kijong-dong, North Korea;4.Akokan, Niger; 5.Pacentro, Italy.Use the features of GoogleEarth to ‘explore’ eachplace from various distances and vantage points. For instance, try ‘zooming’ in and out for different perspectives, and see if ‘street view’ is available at eachsite. You should also try turningdifferent layers on and off. Next, choose any oneplaceand complete the following set of instructions:
1.Describe the absolute location of the red balloonmarkerthat Google Earthused to take you to this place. Why doyou think this specific location was chosento represent the entire place?(2 marks)
