Drama Synthesis Essay, Draft I
A synthesis essay uses two works already provided to you to answer a specific question. Use Oedipus the King by Sophocles and Disgraced by Ayad Akhtar to answer your question of choice (see below). Remember to use evidence from both works to answer the question. The paper should be 3-4 (the first draft can be two pages) pages long with a clear thesis statement that makes a claim, in-text citations and a Works Cited page. (All you have to cite are the Sophocles and Akhtar plays.) You can also use your opinion, but make sure that you are being guided by the two plays. Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, MLA format.
If you need resources to help you correctly use MLA citation format, please see the “Course Materials” section.
Question Choices:
1. Dramatic irony is defined as information that is known to the audience or a reader but not yet understood by a character or the characters in a play. What are the instances of dramatic irony in both texts?
2. How does ignorance (willful or otherwise) shape and/or destroy relationships and lives?
3. Is there such a thing as a self-fulfilling prophecy?
4. How does internal conflict drive external conflict (and vice versa)?
