Rethinking Capitalism
Discuss how the rise of capitalism, the shareholder wealth maximization paradigm has shaped corporate business practices and might have fed into a collapse of ethics in finance and an increase in corporate scandals.
This essay is designed to assess your ability to intelligently discuss financial theories surrounding the shareholder wealth maximization paradigm (e.g. agency theory). This essay is not a place to simply repeat material discussed in class; it is intended to be a means of getting you reflect on theory and practice and use academic insights into formulating an opinion on the matter.
• Students must complete a 1,500-word solo-authored essay. This essay must be submitted using Turnitin on the Monday 09.00AM of Week 10. Penalties for late submission are outlined in the MBA student guidebook.
• Adequate essays will demonstrate a sufficiently deep understanding of the core principles in finance as discussed throughout the module. Good essays will identify and explain limitations in the ability of this theory to explain the real world shareholder wealth maximization behavior. Excellent essays will exhibit an ability to go beyond the syllabus.
• Students’ essays must be concise. They must be professionally word-processed and fully referenced throughout. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will be punished according to the university’s standard procedures.
• It is acceptable to be 10% below or above the word limit, and this limit excludes the bibliography. This leniency aside, this word limit is intentionally set to be low. Its purpose is to encourage students to write precise pieces of communication, without waffle or verbiage. Consequently, this essay will likely require several drafts before you are confident enough to submit a final version
