Read the case provided below and:
1. Identify a cause of poor motivation (a primary problem) by applying relevant aspects of a motivation theory to any part of the case within a structured paragraph (Maximum half page and a minimum of 2 different sources).
2. In a two-column table list all source (primary) and secondary (symptoms) problems.
3. Provide a SWOT analysis for the organisation in an appendix (1 page maximum).
• A minimum of 2 credible sources cited in the analysis for question one. More sources are often required for an HD as good analyses usually have 4 or more good sources.
• Word processed with all discussion for part 1 referenced per the Chicago method.
• Answers to part 1 must have ideas effectively organised within a structured paragraph.
Remember, in analysis writing you must cite source/s in a sentence when you are introducing ideas from a source. No source citations are generally needed for sentences that are applying theory to the case. You can see this in the Expectancy and Equity theory debriefs.

1. When doing a search for “Motivation” theories, narrow results by including “Expectancy” (or “Equity”) with the “and” operator to ensure that only motivation papers that discuss these are included. This will help in screening out those things not so relevant and you can always do more general searches afterwards to help cover other issues to add conceptual depth to your arguments. However, also remember to achieve greater depth in your analysis you should also seek to integrate other motivational concepts (so broader searches are still of use).
2. Do a search for articles written by “Patricia Buhler” ensuring the properties for the search are set to “author” and not “abstract and subject”. She has written a host of articles for Supervision that illustrates the implications of management theories and how to apply them in a case. Equity and related topics are discussed in some of these.
3. It may be wise to also see what you can find on subjects by searching in the library, its databases and credible websites. Note, Wikipedia is NOT credible but it might help you find research and keywords for searches. Remember that you can follow their references to the original source to make sure it’s legit and use that original source. Such matters will also be important to the group assessment. Google Scholar is also a handy resource for filtering out the rubbish that is too common on the internet.
4. Remember – you need a MINIMUM of two articles/books cited in the first section of the individual analysis (the text can be one of these). While stronger analyses generally achieve more than this, we’re more concerned about quality so ensure the sources are adding the needed value.
