Mr. M is a 60 year old married man. He worked in Iraq, previously deployed as a soldier in the
Army. He reports having nightmares and waking up in a cold sweat. Recently, he was in a car
accident and also learned that his best friend died from a heart attack. He reports that he has
had increased irritability and feels isolated. Mr. M reports only getting 4-5 hours of sleep per
night and that he has a decreased appetite and he has lost 8Kg in the last month. Mr. M denies
any suicidal or homicidal ideation. He recently lost his job because his attendance was very
poor. He explains that this is because he was avoiding the office car park and reported that he
experiences flashbacks when he is at work. He has also said that he has been using alcohol to
help him sleep on most nights. After further questioning he admits to taking alcohol during the
day and that it is often above the recommended daily limit.
a) Critically analyse the client’s behaviour and suggest a diagnosis using any one of the two
international classification systems.
b) Propose and justify a set of interventions which may be useful for Mr M.
