The research paper is focused on the economic development of women in India. The author states that there have been gender disparities in different sectors including health care, education, and the female/male sex ratio. The author adds that it is arguable whether the development programs that are designed for the women play their role in the in the promotion of the improvement of gender equality. The researcher involves a longitudinal study that entails quantitative approach of analysis of data from the district level in six states in India. The research examines whether the urbanization and economic development, which are associated with the modernization theory, market-based programs for women, and microfinance programs leads to an increase in female/male literacy ratio and sex ratio. The findings indicate that economic growth is associated with a reduction in the female/male sex ratios. The findings of the article relating to the gender inequalities will be useful when comparing with the findings of the current research, which explains its relevance.
