1. Read all 17 of the Newton poems.
2. Choose the 3 that you think best summarize the way that Newton’s mathematical view impacted the worldview of 17th-century Europeans. (Pro tip: There are different perspectives found in this group of poems. Your job is to notice that fact and to choose poems that ‘cover the field.’)
3. Analyze each of the three in a substantial paragraph (150 words each). The kind of questions to ask yourself when reading it are things like, What seems to be the main point? What do you think is the poet’s attitude towards Newton’s theory? If they are positive about it, why are they? If negative, again, why are they? What does the poet think is at stake in Newton’s accomplishment? What aspect of his accomplishment is the poet praising or criticizing? As evidenced by the poem, how did Newton’s accomplishment impact worldview (including religious worldview if relevant)?
