Influence of Patient Antibiotic Expectation on Prescribing Decision-making
Antibiotics are essential medicines for preventing and treating bacterial infections. However, the efficacy of antibiotics is diminishing due to the ongoing problem of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria change in response to the use of antibiotic medications. In other words, the bacteria adapt to and resist antibiotic medication. This problem is worsening due to the increased antibiotic misuse and overuse (Gaarlsev et al., 2016). A noteworthy fact is that there are limited new treatments for addressing antibiotic resistance, which further exacerbates this complex and life-threatening issue (Frieri et al., 2017). Besides, many patients always expect medical practitioners to prescribe antibiotics during hospital visits when they develop signs or diseases treatable through antibiotics. Therefore, this paper highlight patient expectations of receiving antibiotic prescriptions that negatively impact antibiotic prescriptions.
