This assignment is for you to select and attend one campus activity or event hosted by the institution for students. (I have attached What is Student Activities resource) Choose a higher education institution near you (community college, 4-year, other), and identify campus activities occurring prior to this module. (Please select an American College of your choice)
Activities should be associated with one of the following:
• Student government
• Student organizations
• Greek Life / fraternities or sororities
• Spirit activities
• Campus programming boards / Union activities
• Student leadership programs
• Recreational sports
As part of your observation, talk in advance or during the event with the student affairs professional most directly associated with the activity to gather more information about the event. Discuss the following items or gather this information while in attendance:
• Basic elements of the activity (when it is held, why it is held, who organizes, etc.)
• History of the event (when it began, who initiated the concept, how has it evolved)
• Stakeholders (who is involved in the planning of this event, who is interested in this events success/failure, partnerships/collaborations across campus or community)
• Audience (attendance, marketing, what turnout what was expected, why)
• Funding (actual/estimated cost of event, specific source of funds, overall funding considerations for the event)
• Risk Management (what risk or liability concerns are associated with the event? what steps are taken to manage the related risks)
• Learning outcomes (what are the written or unwritten learning outcomes for the event, other outcomes)
• Assessment (how is the program evaluated, what constitutes success, was there data or information used to design or select program, how is assessment information used)
• Challenges (what challenges are associated with planning of this event? outcomes of this event?)
• Success (what are the strengths of the event, outcomes, successes?)
• Reactions (what are the reactions you observed, discussed, and felt at the event?)
Events are going to vary in scope and scale. You may need to alter questions slightly to fit the type of event you choose. Do the best you can to identify information associated with each element listed by interviewing a professional associated with the event and doing your own research on this type of student activity.
