Your paper must be at least 250 words and no more than 500. Any paper that is too short OR TOO LONG will be subject to a grading penalty.
You must answer all parts of a topic with multiple parts (a, b, etc.).
For any quotation, you must list the last name(s) of the author(s) as well as the page number(s) of the quotation. It is also a good idea to include a citation for points you are summarizing without directly quoting. Whenever you directly quote from a reading, you must explain your interpretation of the quotation (see 10(d), below).
Your answer must have some depth. Really think about and reflect on the issues of a topic and the relevant passages in the text(s), develop your insights, and show these reflections in your paper. Dig into a question, exposing different angles, connections, etc. As part of this, be clear and precise in your presentation of ideas: DEFINE THE TERMS YOU USE (BUT DON’T USE A DICTIONARY: USE YOUR ANALYSIS OF HOW TERMS ARE USED IN THE READING) AND EXPLAIN YOUR POINTS IN DETAIL AND CLEARLY
Topics often ask for arguments. Arguments are not just statements of views. The key to an argument is the supporting evidence and logical steps linking the pieces of evidence to the point you are arguing for. An argument is a point you wish to make SUPPORTED BY A REASON OR REASONS (FACTS, LOGICAL MOVES, ETC.) that make it plausible and which a reasoning person would tend to find acceptable, even if he/she does not agree with the position you are taking.
When including a quotation, you must explain what you think the quotation is saying and how it fits into your paper – what it supports, how it relates to the topic, etc. This will show that you have selected the quotation with a purpose, rather than just pulling some quotation from a reading. It will also address any ambiguities in the quotation. LONG QUOTES WILL REQUIRE LONG INTERPRETATIONS.
