Political savvy leaders have different behaviors that provide critical skills to help them navigate through the organization such as being willing to compromise and delivering on their promise (Roussel et al., 2020). When staff resist change, great leaders must have certain personal powers to move forward and use experiences to get tasks completed (Gibson et al., 2012).
Informational Article One
Leaders must be able to strategize and use what Waring et al. (2018) describes as political skills which help leaders identify, understand, and intervene when there is a conflict. Political skills can be used in a positive manner. However, they neglect the importance of social acceptance and should reflect political astuteness for additional tactics that includes personal/interpersonal skills, reading people, having alliances and developing strategies (Waring et al., 2018).
In summary, Waring et al. (2018) suggest using political skills as a leader to strategize and implement change by remaining politically astute. An exemplar, my nurse administrator used her political skills during yesterday’s meeting and was a mediator between staff and the organization. Being politically astute of the power and politics she faces, she recorded what the staff advised were work environment issues and reported it back to her leaders for guidance on how to resolve.
