Assignment Scenario
You work in a general mechanical engineering company which manufactures pneumatic cylinders. Your manager has been training you on assembly methods and skills before you transfer onto the production line for 2 months. He asks you a series of questions to check your understanding so far.
Assignment Task
Task 1
Using the film clips shown in class and following the group discussion, write a detailed report describing TWO different manual methods that could be used to secure the component parts in the pneumatic cylinder shown below, (i.e. end caps to cylinder body; piston to piston rod etc).
Remember the operation of a pneumatic cylinder is usually highly repetitive and rapid action (fast cycle times). Your answer should include reference to temporary fixing, permanent fixing, frictional and positive methods of restraint. Pneumatic cylinders are usually made/assembled in a mass production process so as to achieve high output and efficiency.
Briefly describe a process that could be used to aid automated alignment and assembly of the four end cap restraining bolts (tie bars). Consider all the appropriate wording. Diagrams may assist your descriptions.
