Here’s the outline for the paper:
1) Introduction and thesis: As always, engage the reader by throwing some facts at him or her so as to convince him or her that the problem exists. At the end of the introduction, provide your thesis that will say something like the following:
The rejection of evolution is caused by three cognitive biases: confirmation bias, availability heuristic, and X. Confirmation bias is a consequence of a segregated media landscape that keeps people stuck in a bubble in which their beliefs are rarely challenged. The availability heuristic is caused by a fundamental misunderstanding between climate and weather. X is caused by…. The most effective way to fix the problem is …..
2) Facts that prove the existence of the problem: In this section, you should provide facts that convince the reader that the problem exists.
3) TWO cognitive biases that explain the problem: In this section, you will provide evidence that each of the three cognitive biases you’ve chosen explains the problem.
Example:
Cognitive bias X explain the problem Y. According to research done by ….
And so on.
4) What causes the cognitive biases: In this section, you should help us understand what the causes of the cognitive biases are: Are they biological or cultural?
For example:
Confirmation bias can be explained by the growing segregation of the media landscape. According to research done by X.,…
Belief bias is influenced by how old and successful someone is.
Think about these issues critically: ask yourself whether the growing polarization in society inflates the effects of these cognitive biases or whether the polarization creates these biases.
5) Solutions: In this section, you should help us understand how we can fix the problem.
