Choice C: VISUALS and ANALYSIS
Choice C asks you to create a set of images or charts related to your topic immigration. Find or create your own images or charts that speak directly your topic. The images/charts may represent a position, an analogy or other type of argument, or even a fallacy! Overall, your selected images should represent at least one argument related to your topic – which you can later clearly name and articulate in terms of the type of inference it represents (inductive or deductive; if inductive, identify the specific pattern of inference — inductive generalization, statistical syllogism, causal argument or reasoning by analogy; if deductive, just note that it’s deductive).
You must have at least 3 images in your collection. Once you create your image collection, you should do the following:
- Reconstruct the arguments of each of the images in your collection in standard form reconstruction (or an argument diagram, if you wish);
- Analyze each of the arguments in terms of the evaluative criteria best suited to it (for instance, if it’s an inductive generalization or statistical syllogism, use the criteria of sample size, comprehensiveness/representativeness, and randomness; if it’s a causal argument, use the criteria appropriate to hypothesis formation and confirmation/disconfirmation; if it’s an analogical argument, ask if the comparative features are sufficiently similar and if there are enough similarities to justify the comparison);
- Represent your argument with appropriate symbols;
- Discuss the deeper meaning of your images (either collectively or individually) for the topic you chose (gun violence, immigration, or #MeToo);
- Conclude with a brief reflection on what you learned by completing this project and the steps leading up to it (Capstone Assignment, parts 1, 2 and 3);
- Properly cite in APA style all your scholarly resources, including the text from this course.
