1. Using examples which interest you, discuss how TWO or THREE interior designers (or architects working on interiors) have produced innovative residential or retail spaces which creatively combine materials and technology, structure and space.
Compare and contrast how the selected practitioners have explored approaches to the particular needs of the project, and the existing structural/material enclosures, in their work.
Questions to consider include:
• How have the designers responded conceptually to the brief to adapt a particular place and space for a new use?
• How has the site been re-planned, and what interventions has the designer introduced
• What forms and materials have these designers specified for these projects, and why?
• How have the existing building elements been integrated with the new work?
• What has been the reception of the designers’ work? Based on published writing, how successful are the projects?
• What are the larger socio-economic, cultural, and historical factors that have influenced the production and representation of their work?
• Why have you chosen the selected practitioners? Are they from a similar time period or cultural context?
2. Using examples which interest you, what are the main issues (e.g. opportunities or challenges) in interior design today? Identify ONE key issue and discuss it in relation to examples of contemporary interior designers. The issue could be, but is not limited to: changing residential, workplace or commercial/retail needs; sustainability; creative responses to economic and space issues in projects, such as the availability of suitable space or new trends in display of goods or artifacts; brand culture; digital culture; gender; globalization; national identity.
Questions to consider include:
• Why you have chosen the selected issue and practitioners to discuss?
• How has the socio-cultural, political, and economic context informed this issue?
• Are there previous historical examples to be considered?
• What has been written in the contemporary design press about the issues facing interior designers?
• How are interior designers addressing these issues and how is this present in their work?
