When you are writing your assignment, you must consider the components of plot (foreshadowing, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, epiphany, resolution) and analyze how the symbolism used by each author helps those components to function effectively. For example: exposition, rising action, foreshadowing, climax, falling action, epiphany, dénouement. All these elements are crucial to how Plot is structured and works, and both stories make use of these elements. Both stories are very symbolism heavy, as well, as we discussed and pointed out. And each of aforementioned elements of plot are enriched through the use of symbolism.
So what you will be doing is pointing out what the symbolism is and how it is used to facilitate the necessary elements of plot needed to tell each story. Example: How does the symbolism used in the exposition suggest the overall plot of the each story? How is symbolism used to aid the raising and falling action. How does the symbolism aid foreshadowing, climax, and suggest the epiphany and/or dénouement. Follow the structure of each story and by nature you will be unveiling how the symbolism is aiding/suggesting the plot as you go.
