Math 135 – Sample Survey Topics
● Systematic Sample: Contact every fourth person who posted a response on
your facebook wall during a specific time range to ask them questions about
their use of social media.
● Cluster Sample: Mark 25 square blocks on a map of your neighborhood’s
boundaries then interview every household living in two of the squares to ask
them questions about their opinions regarding homeowners association.
● Stratified Sample: In a wild horse herd that is 80% females and 20% male,
randomly select a small group of them to study but make sure that the sample
has no more than 20% males to learn about the characteristics of the herd by
finding information about every horse in the sample.
● Random Sample: You are curious about the types of emails you received
during the summer in your email account. You number every email received
and use a random number generator to select a sample of 30 emails to review
and collect data about the types of emails you typically receive.
Examples of Qualitative Questions:
● For which social media platforms do you have accounts?
● What type of role do you play in our homeowners association (president,
secretary, active participant who attends all meetings, semi-active participant
who attends at least half of the meetings, concerned member who reads the
meeting notes but does not attend the meetings, or I don’t participate at all)
● What is your biggest concern that you would like to see the homeowners
association address?
● What types of horses are in the herd?
● What is the purpose of the email?
Examples of Quantitative Questions:
● How many times a day to you check social media sites?
● How many hours a week do you put into the homeowners association?
● How long have you lived in this homeowners association (in years)?
● What is the age of the horse?
● How long (in words) is the email?
● How many hours before I replied to the email?

● Compare the number of hours put into the homeowners association to the
number of years lived in the association to see if there is a relationship
● Compare the length of the email to the number of hours before a reply was sent
to see if there is a relationship between length and time for a reply
