This assignment is the start of future assignments. I thought the topic of hospital acquired pressure ulcer would be a good topic since it is occurring more frequently in our ICU covid unit. These covid patient are requiring “manual proning”, which means patients are flipped down on their tummy to promote better oxygenation. This is done using 4-5 nurses to physically flip them. They stay flat on their belly for 16 hours and 4 hours on their back. It is required to turn these patients every 2 hours to prevent pressure ulcers but due to the unique treatment patients are developing pressure ulcers on their faces and other parts of their bodies. This causing our pressure ulcer numbers to go up and they are reportable to CDPH if the pressure ulcers are stage 3-4. (we are suppose to cluster our care to limit exposure but still expected to turn that often)
