The coursework will take the form of a short research report approx… 2,500 words with subheading. It is a factual document presented with a front sheet, contents page, a brief introduction of the purpose of the report, the body of the report which uses headings for each section and subsection and normally a conclusion (though this is not necessary in this case). Students will need to include a reference list of any references and a bibliography of any sources of information used.
Task 1 – Foundations – Substructure
1. Research and explain the main function of any foundation and discuss the external factors and design factors that need to be considered when choosing a foundation. Select two different residential foundation types and discuss with the use of industry literature and details the reasons and situations for choosing each of the alternate domestic foundations.
Task 2 – External Walls / Alternative Construction – Superstructure
1. Explain, with the use of sketches, the construction and specification requirements of domestic cavity walls that is needed to comply with the necessary UK building regulation approved documents. Additionally compare and contrast some examples from using industry/trade literature etc. alternatives to insulated cavity walls in order to provide a high level of thermal insulation within domestic construction and describe briefly the implications of using these alternatives.
