Cellular Respiration – Scientific Lab Report Data

Information
Cellular Respiration refers to the process of converting the chemical energy of organic molecules as they pass thru a series of enzyme catalyzed reactions into immediately usable energy. All organisms, including plants and animals undergo cellular respiration, but only plants conduct photosynthesis to make their own food.

The objective of this lab – Answers what main action(s) is being done in the lab

Use a O2 and CO2 gas sensor to measure the concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide gases, to determine whether peas respire, as well as, the effect of temperature on cellular respiration.
Use a O2 and CO2 gas sensor to measure the concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide gases, to compare if the size of the germinating seed shows difference in the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide gases, thus increased cellular respiration.

What is the purpose of this lab – Answers what you expect to gain from the lab?
To determine, if cellular respiration is taking place in peas
To determine if cellular respiration is more effective at room temperature or warmer temperatures.
To determine, if the size of germinating seed dictates the amount of cellular respiration it undergoes. (Note – corn and pea seeds are almost the same size, and are larger than barley seeds)

What is the hypothesis of this lab – Answers what you expect to find in your experiments?
What results do you anticipate for this experiment? Usually a hypothesis is written to show the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.
Here’s a basic template for a hypothesis:
“If A (independent variable) is related to B (dependent variable) in a particular way (X), then… (prediction).”
The independent variable is the one the experimenter controls. The dependent variable is the variable that changes in response to the independent variable. i.e Dependent variable is what is being studied/measured.

What is the dependable Variable? In a graph, where does the it go?

What is the independent variable? Where does it go on a graph?

Materials:
Vernier Co2 gas sensor
Vernier O2 gas sensor
25 germinated peas
25 non-germinated peas
25 germinated peas, 25 germinated corn, and 25 germinated barley seed
biochamber 250
ice cubes
two 100 mL beaker
thermometer

Procedure
1.) Set CO2 Gas Sensor to low setting
2.)After connecting both sensors to Lab Quest and choosing New from the File menu, measure the room temp and record it in Table 1
3.) Get 25 germinated peas, dry them off, and place them into the respiration chamber.
4.) Place O2 sensor into BioChamber 250 snugly. Keep vertical throughout experiment. Place CO2 sensor into neck of Chamber. Collect data after two minutes.
5.) Upon data completion, remove both sensors and peas into cold water. Clean the chamber and dry.
6.) To calculate rate of respiration, use linear regression
a.)Choose Curve Fit from Analyze menu and select CO2 Gas
b.)Select Linear as the Fit Equation- y = mx + b
c.) Enter absolute value of slope, m, as the rate of respiration for the CO2 Gas Sensor in Table 2, hit OK
7.) Calculate rate of respiration for O2 Gas Sensor.
a.) Choose Curve Fit from Analyze menu, select O2
b.) Select Linear as Fit Equation, y = mx + b
c.) Enter absolute value of slope, m, as rate of respiration for O2 Gas Sensor in Table 2, select OK
8.) Repeat steps 3-7 substituting non-germinated peas, then again for other controlled experiments.

Data – recorded

Rate of Carbon dioxide and Oxygen produced and utilized on different sizes of seeds data.

Ppm = parts per million it’s the units used for measuring gasses.
