Your first step is to choose an issue/problem/concern of interest to you and do your own
outside research. You could start by asking yourself which topic or issue you most
strongly agree/disagree with OR which subject most energizes you and can engage
your interest for several weeks.
EXAMPLE: Formulate a preliminary position such as these: “Executions are morally
corrupt.” Assisted suicide is murder.” “National security is more important than our
privacy.”
Warning: no matter what you think when you create a thesis, you may shift your
thinking in later revisions. If that happens, so be it. For now, though, it’s enough to take
a position and set out to prove/support it.
Then, make a plan to prove your point. Follow the Scientific Method (look at your
syllabus) to get you going (include all the factors you can in your narrative). Then,
answer the following:
1. How will you support your position?
2. Which evidence will convince your audience?
3. Will your experience apply to this paper?
4. What are your variables?
Answer these in narrative form (no bullet-style writing)
