Work of Junior Fiction A work of junior fiction (to a total of 1500–2000 words) for children aged 6 –12. Your manuscript may be either a complete short story or the opening chapter/s of a longer piece of work –a chapter book or novel. This assignment must include a separate page listing the title and providing a synopsis of the work (max. 250 words -these words are in addition to the creative word count). If appropriate, it should also include an image of a sample illustration by a practising illustrator of the author’s choice, representing the pictorial style that would best accompany the text, and giving reasons for your choice (one paragraph, max. 200 words -these words are in addition to the creative word count). It must also include the name of an appropriate publisher, giving reasons for your choice (one paragraph, max. 200 words -these words are in addition to the creative word count). You must clearly state the intended audience for your writing –specific age group (remember that what appeals to a six year old, will not necessarily appeal to a twelve year old) and any other relevant information such as whether the writing is aimed more at boys than girls, at reluctant, emerging or advanced readers, and whether you intend the work to fall within any particular genre. You must also note the names of two other contemporary writers whose work you feel would appeal to the reader you are aiming to engage, and give reasons why (one paragraph, max 200 words) e.g. “Fans of John Marsden and Anthony Horowitz will enjoy this book/story as it contains similar elements such as a fast-paced, action-driven plot rich with suspense and intrigue.
