” I need to see more engagement with the language of the text. Direct quotations from the text are the life-blood of an English paper; four inclusions is not enough to make a thorough argument. And though you include some compelling outside research here, be careful that your argument doesn’t rely too heavily upon it (rather than on the text, which should be your primary focus).”
“consider building an argument by turning your attention to the concrete language of the novel. Rather than talking about the text in the abstract, dig into the exact expressions the author uses and look for nuanced meanings lurking in the language. The more explicit you can be, the better. In other words, examine—and then analyze—the precise prose techniques that the author uses (tone, diction, image, syntax, etc.). Such analysis will add weight to your argument; it’s often more compelling than evaluating the general contents of a text. ”
“I encourage you, too, to consider the implications of your claims. How might this shared responsibility impact the meaning of the text? Does the narrative ask us to position these characters more closely than we originally imagined? Do the reader’s sympathies toward these two characters change as the novel progresses, or is it static throughout? How does assigning culpability affect our interpretation and enjoyment of the novel? Exploring these questions will deepen your paper, leading to an argument that’s more crucial and more nuanced—in other words, an argument that has more at stake.”
