Fiction Paper Topics

In a 1500-word (appx. 3-4 page minimum) double-spaced paper, citing from at least 3 external sources (print or electronic), please respond to one of the following topics:

  1. Consider the names of certain Flannery O’Connor characters in light of how they are characterized. For example, the grandmother is never truly named. Is she depicted as a “grandmotherly” type? Is the Misfit truly a misfit in society, or a product of his environment? What do we make of June Star and John Wesley? (Remember, you must have a thesis statement.)
  1. Biographical criticism entails delving into the life and influences or experiences of a writer and using these insights to interpret or analyze his/her work. Based on this understanding, please perform research around one of these writers, considering his or her social influences and experiences. Then, review their literary works again and provide an analysis based on what you know. You may conclude that biographical criticism has absolutely no credibility in terms of interpreting a literary work, and this is fine. Simply justify the response.

Kate Chopin – “The Story of an Hour”

Flannery O’Connor – “A Good Man is Hard to Find”

John Updike – “A&P”

Katherine Mansfield – “Miss Brill”

  1. Revisit the character of Miss Brill, OR the main character of Updike’s A & P OR Mrs. Mallard from The Story of an Hour. Fully characterize them. (You should have a thesis statement.) What makes them memorable? Are their actions typical for their times and ages? Are they heroes? Can we sympathize or empathize?
  1. If you’d prefer to come up with your own fiction topic, let me know. We can discuss it.

You MUST include in-text or parenthetical citations, as well as a separate Works Cited Page. Your thesis statement must be clear and debatable and, ideally, should be found in the introductory paragraph. Your thoughts and opinions must be supported by evidence.

Remember, the goal of this exercise is to demonstrate your ability to perform research, you’re your sources properly via MLA style, and communicate effectively in writing. Do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.
