You’ll be asked to choose 5 songs or videos from the unit (you will be prompted to listen to or view these in the Power-Point lectures). For each one, write about half a page. Things to discuss include any musical characteristics you can hear, the context of the song, lyrics of the song, etc. Avoid vague descriptions such as “has a good beat” or “has a melody.” You can describe instruments (to the best of your ability) as well as musical elements such as melody, timbre, form, and rhythm
When and how to cite sources:All assignments can be done based on the course materials provided –nooutside research is required for any assignments. If you are directly referencing course materials in your written assignments, you can do so informally (e.g. “According to the power-point lecture, blah blah blah.”) You should put everything in your own words as much as possible –don’t just cut and paste from the power-points. If you do use exact quotes, you need to use quotation marks.You are not required to consult outside materials, but if you choose to use them, they must be cited formally. You may use any citation system that you are comfortable using –most students use
